The Triple-5 (or 555) is a legendary IC. It was designed in 1971 by Hans Camenzind under a contract with Signetics and went on to be one of the most popular IC's in history. Even today, it is estimated that more than one billion of them are manufactured every year. The popularity is in no small part caused by it's low price point and versatility.

Astable multivibrator

One of the most common circuits created with a 555 timer is the astable multivibrator - which is another word for an oscillator.
