Should ST Make ST-Link Open Source

Two original ST-Link devices

I have always been somewhat baffled that ST's ST-Link firmware is proprietary. In this document I am going to explain why I am baffled and why I think making it open source would be beneficial for all parties including ST.

Before diving into this it is important to stress that since I am not working for ST there could easily be some "hidden" reasons - for example legal that I am unaware of. It is entirely possible that the original source came from some outside source, for example ARM and that ST are contractually required to keep it closed source.
