A diode can be seen as a one-way valve for electric current.

The symbol of a diode is:

The "pins" on a diode is called the "anode" and the "cathode". With an appropriate voltage applied over the diode, a current can flow from the anode to the cathode, but if a voltage is applied in the opposite direction, no (or extremely little) current will flow.
